Wieland Shield

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Wieland Shield?

The W. A. Wieland Trophy is a perpetual trophy for competition between Victorian and American Surf Lifesaving teams and was awarded during the visit of the USA team to Australia in 1967.  The trophy made from Victorian Red Gum Wood, is retained by the winning team until the next competition between Victoria and California.

The idea for the trophy came from the then American Consulate General in Victoria, Mr. W. A. Wieland.  Mr. Wieland presented the trophy of highly polished wood, oval in shape and with the two badges of the Victorian State Centre and the American SLSA on it, after 2 days of competition in 1967 at Ocean Grove and Portsea.

How often is the competition held?

The competition is held ever 2-years.  A team will travel every 4 years.  In 2012 a team from Victoria, Australia will compete in California.
